The cleaning of painted surfaces is certainly a very delicate and complex process that requires extreme selectivity of the cleaning action. For these reasons, until a few years ago, the cleaning of easel and panel paintings represented one of the greatest challenges of laser technology.

In recent years a new process of cleaning for paintings based on Er: YAG lasers at a wavelength of 2.94 μm is spreading successfully. This infrared radiation is strongly absorbed by OH bonds with a corresponding minimum depth of penetration, a crucial feature when acting on paintings.
This is not a real ablative process like in other applications, but an integrated physical / chemical process supported by auxiliary hydroxylated liquids (water, alcohol, other liquid mixtures).
