STATUE OF THE PROPHET HABAKKUK BY DONATELLO

STATUE OF THE PROPHET HABAKKUK BY DONATELLO

History: The statue,  considered a  masterpiece by Donatello and by the renaissance sculpture in general, represents the Habakkuk Prophet which is here depicted as bald-head, thin and wearing a long tunic fallling from his left shoulder and creating deep vertical folds.

The statue was originally placed in the niches of the third order of the Giotto’s bell tower of the Florence Cathedral and was made in the period from 1423-1435. It is made of white marble, life-size (195x54x38 cm) and it is today stored in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo in Florence.

LASER CLEANING METHODOLOGY:

The statue was covered by a black artificial layer plus some black crusts deriving from its former outdoor positioning. This represents the ideal situation for laser cleaning: a black layer on a white marble.

By using the SMART CLEAN system the black patina was easily removed by leaving the substrate intact and untouched.
